Christmas Beetle

Australian Museum App Promotion

Problem:

The Australian Museum needed a motion graphics video to promote Christmas Beetle data contribution from adults and older children. The challenge was to capture people’s attention, communicate a niche scientific topic and get them to download an app.

Insight:
To make the video stand out in a crowded social media environment, I drew inspiration from vintage matchbox art, creating a distinct visual language with bold line work and bright colours. The Christmas beetle was personified as a boastful, larger-than-life character, using humour and exaggerated confidence to entertain and educate simultaneously.

Solution:
By combining humour, eye-catching visuals, and a clear call-to-action, the video aligns with the Australian Museum’s goal to promote the app and raise awareness about the alarming decline of insect species. I designed the video specifically for Instagram Reels,
incorporating fast transitions, punchy visuals, and
a twist ending to maximise engagement and create a sense of loss, instilling a sense of urgency in the audience.
